Between sky and earth, an ancient Romanesque church overlooking the Terni valley
The church of St. Erasmo stands in a splendid position, suspended between heaven and earth, on a spur of rock overlooking the Terni basin.
It was a Benedictine monastery dependent on Montecassino, perhaps erected in the 12th century on the site of the Cesi Fortress.
The original Romanesque structure now appears considerably weighed down by the pronounced buttresses later added along the two side walls.
The façade features a simple portal with two recessed orders; the tympanum, framed by carved moldings, opens into a central oculus closed by a stone screen composed of two strongly convex, alternating quadrilaterals centered by a foliated cross — the building’s only decorative element.
The pentagonal apse, articulated by five corner pilasters, is decorated at the top with small arches and dentil moldings.
L'interno, oggi spoglio, si presenta ad unica navata, con semplice copertura a capanna.
La zona presbiteriale è pavimentata con lastre di pietra, la zona anteriore con mattoni rettangolari o quadrati.
Sull'altare a ceppo, è presente una moderna copia del secentesco busto marmoreo raffigurante il Santo titolare.
Alla destra dell'entrata si trova un interessante rocchio di colonna sfaccettata, sul quale era posta l'acquasantiera.
All'esterno dell'edificio sono visibile le vere di due pozzi, che attingevano a cisterne sottostanti.
